Newcastle Reservoir
Water is low but boats can still launch. Smallmouth bass have been good to excellent. DWR expects trout fishing to improve as the water cools, with rainbows stocked in the fall. Wipers are most active at dawn, dusk and after dark.
Low but holding up thanks to a conservation pool. Good success on rainbow and brook trout with nightcrawlers and spinners. DWR looks for good to excellent fishing through the rest of fall.
Fair to good fall fishing expected for tiger, splake, rainbow and cutthroat trout once summer algae settles out. Illegally introduced redside shiners are present.
Standard rules returned Oct 1: artificial flies and lures only, one trout over 22 inches. Some ash-related fish kills in August from the Cottonwood Fire, but most fish survived. Fair to good trout fishing expected as the water cools.
Low flows after irrigation ends. Fall brown trout are aggressive before the spawn. Cottonwood Fire debris flows killed fish upstream, but the lower river had no fish kills as of DWR's report.
Rainbows to be stocked late October or early November for fair to good winter fishing. Bass and bluegill stay good through fall. DWR listed the reservoir at 25%.
Lower reaches: fall browns. Upper reaches: good to great for cutthroat and tiger trout as it cools. Whirling disease is present, so clean and dry your waders. The lower creek has private land posted closed.
